Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). DVAM began on October 17^th, 1981, as a national “Day of Unity” raising public awareness of domestic violence and in support of survivors.  Day of Unity then became a week-long event and eventually the whole month of October. The first DVAM was officially celebrated in 1987, the same year the national hotline began. DVAM celebrates survivors and their stories, connecting programs and survivors across the nation, and honoring those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.  

Each year across the country, domestic violence shelters and organizations hold events and awareness campaigns to bring knowledge to our communities about the warning signs of domestic violence and help available to survivors. Staple events include the Day of Unity on the first Monday of October and Purple Thursday. Purple Thursday takes place on the 3^rd Thursday of the month. Join us in showing support for Domestic Violence survivors by wearing purple on October 16^th this year.  

Crime Victim Services (CVS) provides trauma informed services for survivors of domestic violence, stalking, and dating violence in Putnam County. In Allen County, we work closely with Crossroads Crisis Center to ensure all survivors of domestic violence receive the support they need. With support in and out of the court system, CVS is here to help survivors at every step of their journey. Whether you need a safety plan, assistance leaving your abuser, or just a listening ear, an advocate is ready to help you.
